The Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G is a prime lens designed for use on DX format Nikon DSLRs. It’s low f stop of 1.8 makes it great for low light situations, such as wedding ceremonies and receptions. It’s also extremely portable measuring just 70mm in diameter by 53mm and weighing just 200 grams. This unobtrusive size makes it ideal for reportage photography, making it easy to discreetly take photographs. Optically speaking it’also provides much better quality images than standard kit lenses.
It’s effective FX focal length of 52.5mm means it avoids the distortion of wide-angle lenses. It’s flattened perspective delivers a natural-looking view which roughly matches the magnification (albeit not the coverage) of human vision. Traditionally this focal length was used for everything from portraits to landscapes. Though the absence of a zoom function can be inhibiting at times, prime lenses like these encourage you to move around more, and fully explore different compositional options.
There are also no worries regarding compatibility issues as it will work on all DX model Nikon’s, even the budget models. As with most Nikon’s the AF is also very quiet and very sharp, there can be some guessing when focussing on objects with very low contrast, but i have yet to find a lens which is completly free from this problem. It’s also cheap, costing less than almost every other lens in Nikon’s catalogue. Overall it’s great lens. Combined with the also affordable Nikkor 50mm 1.8 and the Nikkor 85mm 1.8 you have a very versatile system.
